in contrast to stateside, in Italy there is no one type of Italian cuisine - food of the Italy's regional, so you need to know in advance the regional specialities of the region, traveling to.
ovens burning wood are banned in large part to Venice, then pizza and rolls are not that great. Eat your pizza in Naples to Venice, satisfy your appetite with the fruits of the Adriatic Sea.
Venice is a city of seafood. Despite the lagoon is brassèrent up to the endless cruise ships, it is always full of fish, as well as all the seafood, gleaned in the vicinity of the Adriatic.
A walk through the market of Rialto (San Polo - you can not miss!) will show you a wide variety of seafood, some you've probably never seen or tasted before. Restaurateurs the store here, so you're overview of what you will eat later in the day. You will also find an incredible array of spices in the mercado, who made their way here centuries dating back to the spice trade.

make sure you try fritto misto , a mixture of deep fried squid, Octopus and shrimp. Unlike the heavy and greasy deep fried seafood that you are accustomed to Venetians heads are beautifully bright handed over, creating a divine misto that won't weigh down you.

Venetians are also celebrated for their cakes and pastries. Raising the bar in a coffee shop, order a caffe (non-Italian espresso) and a baicoli or busolai, small local light biscuit/cookies.

stopping here and there for wonderful you wind-up eat a lot less than if you're sitting in a restaurant for a meal. In addition, it is much more fun, especially in the early evening where all the inhabitants are out and about, stopping to socialize on their way back.
how to enjoy the best of Venice ~ learn what that most tourists don't experience
or see another thing you will see is people sipping colorful drinks sunset, usually red or orange. Here is the famous Venetian spritz. Wine with a dash of campari (red) or my favorite, white with Aperol (orange). Late in the day and welcome the start of the evening, the most beautiful is to sit outside a bacaro a spritz with some snacks and watch the world go by. Avoid Piazza San Marco (because it will cost the same as your car payment!) in place in other neighborhoods, like the Cannaregio, in order to reach the people of the country. The people watching is a lot more fun here! Learn more about it in my post on Ca' d'Oro (here ) related
