did you know that the largest royal palace in the world is only 37 kilometres from Naples?
the morning of January 20, 1752 has laid the first stone of the Palace of Caserta for Charles VII of Bourbon, King of Naples and Sicily.
the Bourbon King had decided to build the largest Palace in all of Europe, a palace to rival the beauty of magnificent Paris, Versailles and the Palace Hotel in Vienna.
in a strange irony of fate, Charles VII never lived in Caserta, rather abdicated the throne in 1759 to become King of Spain. The third son, Ferdinand IV becomes King of Naples and Sicily, has lived in Caserta and in 1768 wife Maria Carolina of Austria , who grew up in the Hotel Palace and who was sister Marie Antoinette would marry Louis XVI of France two years later and move to Versailles, the Palace very Caserta is designed to beat.
turned the heads, not ?

path in the gardens of the Palace, Caserta |
in 1997 Caserta became a UNESCO World Heritage site.
for years I wanted to go to Caserta, but she never fit into the TRIPS agreement that I was on, whether it's, I was deprived tour guide or traveling with friends.

I had the chance to sneak out of Italy for a week, during which I could finally visit the spectacular Royal Palace of Caserta in last December.

the Palace and gardens are nothing less than spectacular.
no matter how prepared you think you are, once you walk in the grounds of the Palace of Caserta size is staggering.
it is day, it must have been wonderful.
but practically no one bothers to go see. Looks like the largest royal palace in all of Europe would get the grandiose tourist traffic, but gets about 500,000 visitors a year, compared with Versailles 5 million Caserta.
Unfortunately Caserta in dire need of funds, and as such is a bit run down. The Palace has been used as a training centre for the Italian air force, which, with the Carabinieri, still has offices there. Films like Star Wars, Mission Impossible and angels and demons were shot there. Palace security is apparently absent, and despite the Air Force and the Carabineros are both in residence there were problems of flight, especially recently $100, 000 worth of stolen copper to a driver of lightning on the roof.
there is something this time majestic gardens of huge palaces and it's incredibly sad. Just the thought of Hollywood down on it and trample disrespectfully all over the Park and the rooms all about while they are making their movies felt profaned.
and yet because almost no one bothers to visit Caserta is also that your best kept secret.
other that my friends who live in the region I don't know even one person who was there before.
If you're in the coast region Amalfi/Naples, Caserta is well worth a visit. The station is just in front of the Palace, so you don't need to rent a car.
