Guests Wash Cloths

Multitasker is my middle name!
The reason why I have not posted anything in the last week is because I have been working on several projects at once!

1. I am giving our master bathroom a small facelift. This project is taking me so long to finish because I have not been able to focus on it 100%.  I promise to write about it and share my DIY and photos within the next couple of weeks.

2. I am building a custom dinning room table. After searching for the ONE table that could fit our life style and budget for many months and not finding anything, I finally give up on the online shopping and got to work. This project is half way done and will hopefully be completed by the end of this week if weather permits.

3. I have been knitting away..... I learned to knit when I was a little girl and loved making sweaters and blankets for my dolls when I was in elementary school. It's funny how you never forget certain skills. I thought I would have to re learn to knit but it's kind of like riding a bike. The only thing I noticed is that I am much slower at it!  I have been practicing my old knitting skills by using several simple pattern of wash cloths for my guests.

I apologize in advance for the quality of my images. We have been having very cloudy and rainy weather lately and the use of the flash was necessary.

This pattern is called the chinese waves. it was very simple to follow but required some attention. As you can see above, I messed up a few rows when I was distracted. Who doesn't know how to pearl? This is the first stitch I ever learned to knit. It is so simple and easy to follow. I do not have a pattern for this wash cloth but you can check youtube for How to-videos.

This pattern is called Grandmother's favorite. It has a little boarder all the way around and the stitching is diagonal which requires to increase the number of stitches and decrease them. This how to video can be found here. Note: this video is showing you how to create this pattern the continental way which is the way I learned to knit.

I am currently working on several washcloths which are knitted with the pearl stitch in a diagonal way but with no borders. I will update this page as soon as I am finished.

Headboard DIY

This room is not quite finished, you see! I still need to reupholster a chair sitting in a corner, refinish the dresser, hang pictures and build one small night stand.

But for now....it's all about the headboard!

This room is the smallest bedroom in the house. It is only 12 x 12 with double closet doors (which takes a lot of wall space) and 2 windows.

Do you like waking up with bright sunshine hitting your face at 6:00 AM every morning in the summer? I sure don't.

I purchased really inexpensive straw blinds at Lowes thinking they would be a great light barrier but they turned out more decorative than fonctional and though they weren't doing their job of keeping the sunlight out, I could still not part with them. My solution to this problem was to move the bed to the window side. I liked it ok there but it was missing a certain "je ne sais quoi"! Something more than a picture or a mirror or any other decorative accents. It needed a headboard!

One with height and character.

The board and batten design I had been dreaming of doing on our hallway was now going to live in our guest room.

I purchased the materials and started working. This project only took me a day to put together including the paint part.

The space between the windows is 60.5''

I really wanted squares but you can go for rectangles if you prefer. My squares are 12'' x 12''

Materials

9 MDF boards 6' x 2.5" x 3/4" for all the squares.

1 MDF board 6' x 5.5" x 3/4" for the top of the headboard

1 MDF board 6' x 1" x 3/4" for the shelf at the top of the headboard

Nail Gun

Liquid Nail

Paintable Caulk

Level (large and small)

Primer

Paint

Instructions

Measure the size you want your headboard to be. It could go from one wall to another. Mine was going to fit between 2 windows and measured 60.5 inches wide and about 76 inches tall.

I leveled, glued and nailed the top piece on the wall first than added the center board

I glued and nailed the other boards vertically using one of the 12'' pieces (from below)  as a spacer

The space between each board is 12". I cut 16 pieces of MDF that I glued and nailed using one of the pieces as a spacer so my squares are even.

Caulk all crevices well. let dry and sand.

Glue and nail your shelf board at the top. Prime and paint your headboard. I used an angled brush for the tight corners and a small roller. You will need several coats of paint.

Voila!

Master Bath Re-Do

Vermont, Burlington - Report by Genesis. Today, we will give information about Master Bath Re-Do.

Greetings!

Here is a project I have been working on. I am not quite finish with it but wanted to give you guys a sneak peek!

Builder grade bathroom mirrors are always so large and plain so I decided to build a small bookcase to give a more separate distinct look to our sinks.

I still need to frame each mirror with case molding as well as paint the walls and maybe even add some beadboard wainscoting... but you get the idea!

Materials:

Wood boards without knots. (I chose Aspen and I only needed 2 pieces. Each board measured 4'x7"x1")
Crown Molding
Baseboard Trim
Fiber Board Backing
Nail Gun
Trim Nails
Liquid Nail
Wood Putty
Kreg Jig Tool
Kreg Jig Screws
Kreg Jig Pocket-Hole Plugs
Jig Saw
Circular Saw
Sand Paper
Paint of Choice

Instructions:

1. Measure the height from the sink counter to the top of the mirror and the space between your two sinks.
I needed my bookshelf to be 45'' H x 15'' W x 7'' D to fit that space without being too cumbersome or too narrow/too long.

 

2. Cut one of the boards into 4 pieces measuring 12.75" each with the circular saw and set aside
cut the other board to measure 45 Inches
Follow the instructions on your Kreg Jig and drill 2 holes on the right and left side of each small board. 

3. Measure the height and depth of the back trim of your counter and with a jig saw cut out the piece at the bottom of both side boards so that your bookcase rests against the mirror without any gaps.

4. Sand all boards

5. Attach shelves to sides. I used a small piece of wood to keep my shelf board square and held it all together with a clamp. (Note: if you are working alone, Kreg Jig has a special clamp that will fit in the hole on one side and lays flat on the other side so it can stabilize the two pieces together while you screw in the wood screws)

Screw the top shelf with holes facing up so you don't see them underneath. All other shelves should have the holes facing down. Cover the holes with Kreg Jig pocket-hole Plugs

Special Note: I wanted the bottom shelf to be at the same level as the back trim so I had to rip the shelf and make it only 6.25" deep instead of 7". You can skip this step! (I like to complicate things a bit)

6. Attach Crown molding and baseboard trim. Sorry, I had camera problems and could not document this step. You can purchase a crown molding kit from Kreg Jig to help give more precise cuts if you are a beginner. Since I only had four 45 degree angle outside corners to cut, I had no problems using only the circular saw.
Glue the baseboard trim and nail gun it together. Putty the holes and gaps if you have any and let dry for a few hours.
Do the same for the crown molding.

7. Prime and paint your books case.

Artwork Reproduction Made Easy

Colorado, Denver - Report by Abigail. Today, we will give information about Artwork Reproduction Made Easy .

All you need is:
Tissue Paper
scissors
printer
Mod podge
brush (is I used a foam)
Cheap Canvas

I followed simple instructions on how here to print on tissue paper , then chose my art and voila!

Step 1.
Cut the tissue paper on the size of your support sheet (sheet of paper the tissue paper receive will use to help through the printer).

Step 2.
Spray one side of the carrier film with some light spray. After spraying, I usually pat the paper a little with my fingers, so it is not so sticky and a pain to peel! Trust Me on this one, I repeat steps 1 to 3 a few times had me before I could peel it in one piece from, but can also be the quality of your tissue paper.

Step 3.
Hold shiny side of tissue paper down to the carrier film and press lightly. If you press hard, you can have a hard time, there have peeling off after printing. Try and get rid of as many wrinkles as possible but. Or not!

step 5.
Pull the tissue paper from the carrier sheet carefully.
After I as shown on the video, I noticed that it quietly rolled at the edges a little (perhaps because of its size), so I put it on the table and place heavy objects on the corners set and edges paper just to keep from rolling and stick together to get on the canvas while the adhesive.

Step 6 .
Apply mod podge with a foam brush in several sections. I started on the narrower side of the screen in an up and down for about 2 or 3 inches in width and began the tissue paper image is pasted.

when I mod still 2 or 3 inches longer podge brushed the same painting movement with and I unrolled paper a little more of the tissue it to stick to the screen that really well with your fingers every time down to press each to avoid air bubbles.

Step 7.
to give now for the finishing touch and my artwork a professional and finished look, I only applied myself some mod podge all to protect the canvas in an up and down motion.

Voila! You're all done.

you can be photo, the creative print and a nature scene or a children's artwork image to tissue paper a family. Your imagination is the limit. This is the easiest way I've found photos on canvas transfer. I am fortunate to have a large size printer, the sizes can print to 13x19 inches. It is a cannon Pixma ix6850. It is wireless and only cost me $ 140 at Amazon Free Shipping.
