15 things to do in Venice
to visit Venice for one day is a crime.
visit the Italy and do not see that Venice is a greater crime. But sometimes all you have is a day, then you must know how to use wisely today and don't miss out on the best of Venice by just hanging out where the tourists are. Here are 15 things you must do when you're in Venice.

market (and works, and works)
everybody walks in Venice. The market is part of the social structure of this the most unique city in the world. Sit on a bench or a wall around Venice and watch life happen all around you as the Venetians walk on, stopping to chat with friends and neighbors.
your total experience of Venice is begins and ends with the market. Even if it's the only thing you're doing here, just walk and walk and walk.
"is the only way to get around Venice, whether you're a Countess or a merchant walking" ~ John Berendt
lost in Venice

Venice is actually small, and is also the safest city in Europe, so don't be afraid not - get lost! Store your card and just wander around the back streets (where Venetians live). Most of the tourists are all standing in line in front of the Basilica and Campanile, or you buy 15 euro Caffè at Piazza San Marco, so you can finally breathe as you walk and explore the little canals that lead to nowhere part, walkways and alleys magic with crumbling plaster and rusted metal square secret gardens, small community private little hidden cafes. It's wonderful!

make your goal to madly, madly, completely lost.
hit Piazza San Marco at the beginning
technically, if you go to Venice, you don't really have to go to St Mark's place. The problem is that it is all most people will see.
at the point where cruise ships have disgorged their visitors for the day and the day trippers arrived, St Marks square / Piazza san Marco is transformed into a human crush surrounded by sellers Made In China not expensive Venice knock offs. It is terrible.
if the key is to get there before the crowds descend on the place. It's really beautiful and magnificent, especially during the off season!

of the Ducal Palace the Tower A take

or having a local guide helps you take , or rent an audio guide. You miss too much and too many interesting things if you try to freestyle your way through this Palace. Cross the bridge of sighs closed and look out at the sight of the last prisoners had as they were introduced to the Court in the Doge's Palace to the prison on the other side. Prison is worth need to be as well through

walk the Dorsoduro
the Dorsoduro is my favorite of the siesteri. I can walk for hours and never get bored.

you find less tourists there and endless beautiful things to see. Some of the highlights include Salute, the Guggenheim Museum (Peggy Guggenheim lived there and is buried in the garden with his dogs) and incredible palaces including the magnificent Ca' Rezzonico.

visit Ca'Rezzonico
Venice is full of great old palaces, but one of my favorites to visit absolute is the Ca' Rezzonico. To understand the Venice you really need to understand the level of opulence, decadence and staggering display of wealth that make up its history.

to go deep and Go High
two keys to understanding and Venice experience must stand up to see the view and then go deep. Everywhere where tourists are, walk in the opposite direction! Stroll through the streets and alleys away from the little crowd-moment-kodak is the way to see the best of Venice.

to go Hopping Bacari
If you spend nights in Venice and I hope you, the way to discover the night life, or after a life of work is to go to island bacari. Bacari are small bars where you take a glass of wine, or a shadow (glass of wine) and some similar appetizers to tapas. You talk for awhile with friends, then go to another bar.
is a great, fun way to spend your early evening social.

eat the local Cuisine
I wrote a blogpost on what to eat in Venice, read here.

the key to eat in Venice is to only eat local cuisine. Do not order pizzas and panini, as large ovens burning wood are banned in Venice. Food them are wonderful, especially if you're a seafood lover. Or a fan of pastries and cookies.
take A Ride on the Vaporetto

view the vaporetto |
riding around on the vaporetto is a must when you are in Venice.
(the vaporetto is actually a water-bus)
it can be crowded on routes taking tourists to St Marks, but everywhere else it's a great way to see the city on the water, water
drink a Spritz

the spritz is the local drink in Venice. Sitting at a wine bar in open air at the end of the day and watch the world pass, or chat with the locals while sipping this mixture of light and sparkling.
visit Santa Maria Dal Salute
I am so in love with this church.
![]() |
santa Maria Dal Salute |
, it stands proudly on the Grand Canal in Dorsoduro and is one of the most recognized and beloved Venice views. The dome of Santa Maria della Salute is the symbol of the magical Venice horizon, seen by millions of tourists each year - on the way to the Piazza San Marco.
walk all around the outside of the Church, the architecture is beautiful! beware of angels falls - there was a sign posted outside the Church warning that the angels upward at the top (which always seem to be reeling, but are in fact attached to the Dome) can fall.
where to stay in Venice
visit the small church of Santa Maria Dei Miracoli
, this beautiful small church in marble was built between 1481 and 1489 in the siestere of Cannaregio.
in 1987, the organization Save Venice began what they thought would be a 2 years, 1 million dollar restoration, which turned into 10 years and $ 4 million. The marble Church coating contained 14% salts and was about to burst. Restoring means remove the plate and clean in stainless steel tanks in a solution of distilled water.
internal art, which is spectacular, has been blacked out and had to be cleaned and restored.
when the lines to the Basilica are long, you can usually walk right on to Santa Maria dei Miracoli and often be the only people it 3 hours ago.

Berendt wrote midnight in the garden of good and evil. And then moved to Venice.
plan for The Blue Hour
I hope that you will always be in Venice for the blue hour - this magic hour at the end of the day (well, more like half an hour, actually) just after the sunset, when natural light and artificial light mix and with a high sense of dramatic art turns blue in the world. There's no better place in the world to photograph the blue hour.
OK, so maybe there is. But Venice is breathtaking. Discover fantastic blogpost of Jeff Bell on the blue hour in Venice for inspiration!
make sure that you know where you want to be in the Sun to get your perfect shot.

walk The city in the wee hours of the morning
If you are lucky enough to be in Venice at night to walk in the small hours of the morning. Everyone will be back in his bed and you'll have the city to yourself.
, it is moody and mystical, the mist rolls and makes ghostly, when the moon on lighting .is is ethereal. In the wee hours of market Venice is one of the really sensational experiences of life.
